OK, so I found this video on my Facebook feeds and many people liking and commenting good things about the video. I’ll let you guys watch and see what the video shows.
Ok, I just want to make it clear that i’m writing this strictly for a educational purpose and not to talk badly about a company or a person.
First of all, this exercise is called a Deadlift, stiff leg Deadlift, or Romanian Deadlift, I honestly can’t really tell which one they are going for because the form is really bad. For context I found this on my Facebook feeds from a friend who shared it, with the title “Dead-lifting her own body weight”. This is a great accomplishment, but there is no need to go to this weight when your form is bad. Always use light weight when performing this exercise, master the form with the weight, then you move up without compromising form. So we are all on the same page, this exercise if performed poorly can destroy your lower back. Here’s a video of things to watch for and proper technique. If you just want to see what not to do skip to 1:55.
During this exercise, you want to keep your back flat during the entire motion to protect it, bracing your abs against the ab wall further protecting your lower back. Not curving your back and keeping it straight is the main thing I stress when training a client with this exercise. Also, there is no need for a weightlifting belt, you should only use one if you are a heavy weightlifter or a power lifter, otherwise go without it, this will further improve your cores stability. For the record, this exercise when done right is an amazing compound exercise, when done wrong it’s an injury waiting to happen.
The main reason for this post is to make sure the sources that you get your exercises from are good sources and legitimate, there are many videos out there that practice extremely bad form on all types of exercises. I advise getting a good trainer to check your form and make sure that you are being safe with your exercises. Just watching this video breaks my heart knowing that this woman is paying for a service and trying to be safe, thinking that her trainer is protecting her and he is basically being a cheerleader for a badly executed exercise and praising her. This sadly happens, so be very careful out there when training and if you have any questions about anything, a exercise, form, or if the advice you are receiving is good, please, please, please just ask me in the comments of any of my posts or send me a email or message I will gladly answer.
