Spartan Race (Beast)Mode

So after much thought I have decided to do a Spartan Race this May, I am the type of person to go big or go home. So, I will be doing the BEAST obstacle course in Big Bear, Los Angeles. I know that this will be one of the hardest things and will have to do and I will have to train specifically for it.

This is where it becomes personal. In 2008 I went to basic training for the United States Air Force, during basic training since I figured out that I was flat footed and had tendonitis in both my feet. consequently I was medically discharged from the USAF because I was unable to complete the running portion of the PT exam. The pain of running was like extremely painful shin splits and it took forever for me to get it done. I believe my last 2 and a half mile took my over 25 minutes, even with the staff sergeants and sergeants of about 20+ flights walking along the side of me telling me I was worthless and shouting obscenities to make me run faster.

When I was discharged I was told not to run, walk or stand for long periods of time by the doctors. Needless to say I didn’t exercise. I didn’t even eat good. I struggled with depression and not knowing what to do next, the struggle was real. I remember getting as big as 250lbs., when in the USAF I was at 150lbs. an almost 100 lbs over the following year.

I looked in the mirror one day and asked myself “what am I doing?! do I really want to live the rest of my life looking and feeling like this?” The answer was no. So I honestly said “Fu#k what the doctors said, i’m going to get my life back.” I lost all that weight working out 2 times a day for 6 weeks, using workouts that I created. I went from 250lbs. down to 165lbs. 19% body fat down to 9%. Despite the doctors saying that I shouldn’t walk, run, or stand for long periods of time. I started training others using the workouts I created to help them reach their goals.

The reason for this glimpse into my life was…

1.) To tell a little bit about myself. Everyone struggles, whether it’s with weight or with something else. But you can always overcome and change the outcome. It’s always best to learn from someone who has been there and done that, and talk from experience.
2.) Although I am a Certified Personal Trainer that has helped hundreds and hundreds of people train to reach their goals. I also have goals that mean a lot to me. This spartan race not only has a lot of running but, also has a lot of random obstacles. Running for long distances is still something that I fear will flare up my tendonitis. (That pain is unbearable)
3.) If you want to train, or want to know how I am training, you could always reach out to me. I will be getting information from a friend of mine who is Pro Obstacle course racer that was on Team USA.

This is the information about the Spartan Race

12+ Miles

30-35 Obstacles

3 Hours Fastest Time

If you’re looking to unleash your inner beast and go to places you never imaged, the Spartan Beast is perfect for you. With 12-14 miles and 30-35 obstacles between you and the finish line, the Spartan Beast will test everything you’re made of: your strength, your endurance, your resolve. The unpredictable terrain and Spartan Obstacles are masterfully designed to push you deep into your discomfort zone, and well past those self-imposed obstacles you once considered your limits. Beast mode: on.

Have fun and always know that you can change the outcome of your health and fitness.
